How to Make White Clothes White Again With 4 Simple Ingredients

There’s nothing more frustrating than pulling your favourite white clothes out of the wash only to find that they’re looking a little dull or dingy.

White clothing is one of my favourites, however everyday wear, food spills, body oils and general buildup can slowly take away that crisp, bright look we love. This is an easy little DIY that I love keeping in my cleaning routine, and the ingredients are simple household staples.

What you'll need

To make this DIY white-clothes cleaning mixture, you'll need:

  • Water

  • ½ cup 3% hydrogen peroxide

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid

That's it!

Why these ingredients?

Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used in laundry and household cleaning because of its oxidising properties, making it useful when you're trying to brighten whites and tackle certain stains.

Baking soda can help with cleaning and deodorising, while adding some gentle cleaning power to the mixture.

Dishwashing liquid is designed to break down grease and oils, which can be particularly useful when you're dealing with everyday marks and greasy residue on clothing.

How to make the mixture

Start by adding warm water to a bowl or bucket.

Add:

½ cup 3% hydrogen peroxide
1 cup baking soda
1 tablespoon dish soap

Mix everything together carefully until combined. Soak your garment in this mix for 1 hour and then place in your usual wash!

How to use it on white clothes

Before using any homemade laundry solution, always check the care label on your garment.

Different fabrics can react differently to cleaning ingredients, so it's important to make sure your clothing is suitable first. I also recommend testing the mixture on a small, inconspicuous area before treating the whole garment.

Keep your whites looking fresh

The easiest way to keep white clothes looking their best is to deal with stains and buildup sooner rather than later. And when your whites start looking a little tired, this simple DIY is a lovely one to have up your sleeve!

I hope this little laundry trick helps you get your whites looking fresh and bright again, lovelies.
